Are you surprised that there even is a “good”? Well, here it is. In ideal circumstances, inflammation is the bodies built- in defense system, providing protection from invading bacteria, viruses and injuries. When the body is under assault, it responds by setting in motion an inflammatory process that sends chemicals from the body’s white blood cells to the area at risk.
Notice the word ideal.
After the infection has healed, the inflammation is supposed to go away.
But, and here comes the “bad”, sometimes the system gets out of whack, leading to chronic, low levels of inflammation that linger anywhere in the body and within your blood vessels, joints or organs. So, while short bursts of inflammation help the body fight infection, chronic, low-levels of inflammation can wreak havoc on the skin. When the inflammation is in the skin, which is the body’s largest organ, it can affect not only your health, but also your looks.
Digestion is super important too. When the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract are thrown off balance from stress, bad diet or certain meds like antibiotics, this can lead to internal inflammation. Internally caused inflammation can show up on your face in a bunch of ways including acne, rosacea, wrinkles, and sagging skin.
And here is the “ugly”. Inflammation is a major player which affects the skin in bad ways. Prolonged inflammation can cause oxidative stress* and the formation of free radicals which damage protein, collagen, DNA and lipids. Yikes! All this means your skin will show the effects.
